Juried Exhibit at Moncton City Hall

Juried Art Exhibit at Moncton City Hall - painting in lower right "Time Stood Still", Oil on canvas 20X30" © 2010 Shayla Perreault Newcomb (frontal view here)

How are you doing keeping up with the fun busyness of summer? Much of my routine has gone out the window but my studio is full- 20 canvases all set to go. Some already started. This is the first time I've stretched them myself and they're as taunt as a drum. That's great for keeping the brush from hitting the supports in the back and leaving funny marks on the painting.

Also enjoying summer reading on a quilt in the park. Here's a quote from my latest book, "Power of Art" by Simon Schama:

"Great art has dreadful manners. The hushed reverence of the gallery can fool you into into believing masterpieces are polite things, visions that soothe, charm and beguile, but actually they are thugs. Merciless and wily, the greatest paintings grab you in a headlock, rough up your composure and then proceed in short order to rearrange your sense of reality."

Actually, I love it when a painting roughs me up like that. As in, changes the way I see things, or surprises me. Talks to me. What do you think... can a painting be aesthetically pleasing and still be "a thug"?

I love that quote Shayla.
Unless it's super disturbing, I really like it when a painting grabs me like that.

Congrats on the show!
And even more - congratulations on spending a summer in your own style...

I know your purple sofa will be jealous, but...See ya at the hammock...!

Your painting looks amazing, I really like the frame you chose too. Summer outdoor reading is just the best.

Fantastic quote, Shayla! Oh, yes, I think art, no matter the form really, can be beautiful but brutal at the same time! Beautiful can sometimes be serene or other gentle things... but it is great when it can turn your emotions and thinking upside down. Your summer sounds great--a mix of work & play. :o) At the moment I've not been well, and it's been crazy-busy so summer feels like it's slipping by all too fast... Happy Days, my friend )((HUGS))

Oh yes art can be thugishly aesthetically pleasing and I'm always up for a good headlock. It's such a great feeling when a piece of art can effect you that way.

Hmmm...headlock? My artwork's not that developed yet; it just stands there, like a street punk, staring accusingly at you, daring you to make the first move. :-)

Congrats on the show. Your work looks great on the wall. Summer does have a way of putting everything out of wack. I'm just doing whatever comes to mind this summer. No long term plans- so great!

Libby, I know what you're saying and I agree. The artist's motives play a role in how I feel about it and if the only goal is to shock- well I tend to have little respect for that.

Jeane- thanks Jeane, happy summer to you too!

Leslie- they were the opening lines of the book, great way to start.

DJ- Thanks for stopping by earlier. Life chaos threw off my routine, including blogging and before I knew it a month went by. Still trying to get back to it. Thanks for the encouragement and the chuckle. Yep, the sofa's not getting as much mileage.

Jane, a frame makes a difference, thanks for noticing. I think that's why many people buy prints- the art is somewhat dead but the frame looks like an elegant piece of furniture. They add a finished look to originals too. Got any good summer reads on the go?

Tracy, I hope you're feeling better now. I'm on my way over for a 'visit.'

Robyn, well put :)

DJ- :D Your response was art- I can picture those feelings now (they have a mohawk). "The first move"- the interaction part is one of my favorite things and 'street punk paintings' are right on.

Margaret- sounds perfect!

M. Kate- Great to see you again!! :D xoxo

Don't we just love anything that brings our emotion to the surface?

Reading on a quilt in the park...now you're making me dream...

Oh yes Deborah, what would summer be without our books? I'm enjoying "The Life Room" by Bialosky right now. What is your favorite read at the moment?

fantastic quote! So much fantasy goes on about "being an artist or writer" when a lot of hard work and life choices sit on that path day by day.
